This is a two-year position for those who are currently in surgical training or residency (see adjacent column).  

 The Program in Global Surgery and Social Change (PGSSC) is a collaborative effort between the Harvard teaching hospitals, Harvard Medical School/ Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) and Partners In Health (PIH). Through the Paul Farmer Global Surgery Fellowships and Research Associate positions, it aims to empower surgeons, surgical trainees and medical students around the world with the skills they need to improve the health of some of the world's most impoverished people through education & training, research and advocacy.

This is a two-year position for those who are currently in surgical training or residency (U.S and international), and who wish to take time off during their training to conduct research pertinent to global surgery, anesthesia, and obstetrics and gynecology care as well as advocate for said research, education, and policy development in the field of global surgery in resource poor settings around the world.

Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Physician-Scientist Fellows will be paid according to their ACGME post-graduate scale and commensurate with other fellows/residents in their respective programs. The Helen Hay Whitney Foundation

A two-day Annual Meeting of Fellows is held in November of each year, at which each third-year Fellow presents the results of his or her research. This meeting is an important component of the Fellowship Program because of the opportunity it provides the Fellows for scientific interchange and exposure to biomedical fields other than their own. Attendance at the meeting in its entirety is expected as a condition of acceptance of the fellowship.

The Helen Hay Whitney Foundation supports early postdoctoral research training in all basic biomedical sciences. The amount of this award is $50,000/year. The SIS/Wyeth Evaluative Research Fellowship Award supports only projects dealing with the broad area of evaluative research in surgical infection. Residents or fellows who have completed at least two years of post-graduate training in a surgical discipline are eligible to apply for the SIS/Pfizer Evaluative Research Fellowship Award. (Please note that this fellowship will only be awarded as funds are available.) Research proposals should pertain to the broad area of evaluative research in surgical infection. Typical topics might include: 1. Clinical epidemiology (factors affecting the incidence of surgical infections, morbidity of surgical infections, epidemiology of surgical infections) 2. Health services research (surgical infection costs, need for hospitalization, measuring improvements in clinical care of surgical infections) 3. Decision analysis (need for antimicrobial intervention, results of surgical infection interventions).  Concomitant enrollment in a formal graduate-level training program in evaluative, epidemiology, and/or outcome research is strongly encouraged.

Thoracic Surgery Foundation (TSF) Resident Research Fellowship

TSF Resident Research Fellowships provide support of up to $30,000 per year for up to two years. These awards are designed to provide salary and/or direct experimental support for surgical trainees who wish to acquire investigational skills. Although a specific research program is required as the major component of the application, emphasis in making the award is placed on the potential of the applicant, based on prior accomplishments, and the quality of the educational experience for the applicant. Particular emphasis is placed on evidence of supervisory interaction in preparation of the application, the extent to which research training and a productive educational experience is convincingly described, and the training environment. Additional criteria include the probability of successful project completion and an assessment of the importance of the particular educational effort toward the advancement of cardiothoracic surgery.

Fellowship Research Grant applications are submitted in one of three categories: basic, clinical, or translational science. The AST Research Network strives to support a Fellowship Research Grant in each category, provided funds are available.

  • Basic Science is defined as anything in discovery science from molecules to cells to animal models.
  • Translational Science is defined as anything from animal models designed specifically to translate basic research to clinical application, to work with clinical human samples with clear translational impact.
  • Clinical Science is defined as research involving human patients, from data mining to testing new protocols and therapies. Clinical science includes the following two types of research:

o Clinical Trials: designed to answer specific question(s) about new therapies or new ways of using known treatments. Preference will be given to prospective studies. 

o Clinical Outcomes or Observational Studies: designed to better define the causes and/or consequences of pathological or biological processes in transplantation. Retrospective studies may be appropriate. However, proposals that analyze registry data (e.g. data collected by the United Network for Organ Sharing) are expected to test unique hypotheses or employ new data or methodologies. The analysis, including the statistics, should be performed by the applicant and not by the data registry staff.

Caring Wisely™ is an organized process for engaging and supporting frontline staff and clinicians in efforts to remove unnecessary costs from healthcare delivery systems and improve the quality of care delivered. The program was created and launched by the UCSF Center for Healthcare Value in November 2012.

UCSF Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education

Stipends range from $49,000 to $59,000 depending on years of postdoctoral experience.

NEW: The purpose of the fellowship is to prepare individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds to join the next generation of academic leaders in tobacco control. Upon completion of training, fellows will be well positioned to be active participants in crucial policy debates about the future development and implementation of tobacco control interventions.  The program offers supervised research experience in tobacco control with the Center faculty. Each trainee meets regularly with a faculty mentor regarding research progress and career or professional issues.

The Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program of California (TRDRP) – Post Doctoral Fellowship Award

Funds up to $60,000; maximum duration 3 year The Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program of California (TRDRP) administers the portion of state retail taxes on tobacco products that are designated for research within California. This unique source of funding supports investigators at eligible California institutions whose research contributes directly to the elimination of smoking and tobacco use and mitigates its human and economic costs in California.
