June 2, 2020

Werlin2We are deeply saddened to report the passing of Evan C. Werlin, M.D., a rising chief resident in General Surgery, and a beloved colleague and friend.

Evan Charles Werlin was born December 22, 1985 and passed peacefully May 27, 2020 following a three-year hard fought battle against a rare form of cancer. Evan excelled at everything he did; graduating from Brown University Magna cum laude, and The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine; and happily became a stellar general surgery resident at UCSF.

During that time, Evan received numerous awards including the prestigious Teaching Excellence Award for Cherished Housestaff (T.E.A.C.H.) in 2017 and the William P. Schecter Trauma Resident of the Year Award in 2019. Most recently, Evan matched at his top choice for the Fellowship in Vascular Surgery at UCSF. He was a skilled surgeon with a deep passion for his chosen profession.

Alyssa Evan Red RockEvan lived life to the fullest and pursued his dreams wherever he could. He loved music, exotic travel, snowboarding, cats and throwing pottery- to name a few. His passion for living was boundless and he continued to be positive and strong throughout this terrible ordeal.

Evan CatsThose who loved him are heartbroken and devastated by the loss of such an incredible man. The world is better for him having been in it, and we are lucky he touched our lives, albeit far too briefly.

Evan is survived by his parents, Sally and Larry Werlin; his sisters Rachel C. Schumacher and Emma W. Miller; his nieces and nephew Addison, Lorelai, Audrey, and Levi Charles; his fiancée Dr. Alyssa Perez, a pulmonary/critical care fellow at UCSF; and his most beloved cats, Minerva and Moses.
