Ginny L. Bumgardner, MD, PhD, FACS

Dr. Bumgardner is the Ohio State University (OSU) College of Medicine Associate Dean for Physician Scientist Education and Training, Director of the OSU Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) and Director of the Department of Surgery's Research Training Program. She is a tenured Professor and transplant surgeon-scientist in the OSU Department of Surgery, Division of Transplant Surgery and Comprehensive Transplant Center at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. She holds the Olga Jonasson MD Professorship in Surgery.
Dr. Bumgardner performs abdominal transplant surgery, provides pre-transplant, peri-transplant and post-transplant care and immunosuppression management. In addition to patient care, teaching and education administrative responsibilities, she directs an NIH-funded Transplant Immunology Laboratory. As the OSU College of Medicine Associate Dean for Physician Scientist Education & Training she oversees physician scientist and career development across the spectrum of early-stage trainees to early career faculty. She is passionate about mentorship and support surgeon-scientist and physician-scientist careers. She is the program director/principal investigator for the NIGMS OSU MSTP T32 (MPI), the NIAID postdoctoral OSU Advanced Training in Immunology for Surgical Trainees (ARTIST) T32 (MPI), the OSU NIAID R38 Stimulating Access to Research in Residency (StARR), the OSU NCATS CTSA pre-doctoral T32 training program in clinical and translational science and the NIAID T35 Short Term Training in Virology and Immunology (STRIVE) for medical students.
She served as a member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgeon Scientist Program Committee and ACS Blue Ribbon Committee II "Training in Research" subcommittee. She spearheaded the Inaugural ASTS Surgeon Scientist Career Development Conference that took place October 9-10, 2025. She was elected to the Ohio State Mazzaferri-Ellison Society of Master Clinicians in 2020 and received the Ohio State College of Medicine Distinguished Educator Award in 2021. She served as the President of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (2024-2025).
